Kapoor (4 September 1952 – 30 April 2020) was an Indian actor known
for his work in Hindi
cinema. He
received the National Film Award for
Best Child Artist for
his debut role in his father Raj Kapoor's 1970 film Mera Naam Joker.He had his first
lead role as an adult, opposite Dimple Kapadia, in the teen romance Bobby (1973), which won him the Film fare Award for Best Actor.
Leading roles (Before
2000)
Kapoor's first on-screen appearance was a cameo at around age
three, in the song "Pyar Hua, Iqrar Hua Hai",[16] in
his father Raj Kapoor's film Shree 420.He debuted in Raj
Kapoor's 1970 film Mera Naam Joker, portraying the childhood of the
latter's character.[19][6] He played his first leading role,
opposite Dimple Kapadia, in the 1973 film Bobby, also directed
by his father. About the making of Bobby, he said in a 2012
interview, "There was a misconception that the film was made to launch me
as an actor. The film was actually made to pay the debts of Mera Naam
Joker. Dad wanted to make a teenage love story and he did not have money to
cast Rajesh Khanna in the film".The film went on to become one
of the decade's biggest hits in India,[and earned him the Film fare Best
Actor Award. He starred in several light-hearted comedies in the 1970s—Rafoo
Chakkar (1975) with Neetu Singh, Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)
with Amitabh Bachchan, and Khel Khel Mein (1975)
and Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977) with Zeenat Aman—among
others.He worked with Neetu Singh, who he married in 1980, for the first
time in Zahreela Insaan (1974); the couple went on to share
the screen in multiple projects including Kabhi Kabhi (1976)
and Doosra Aadmi (1976).
Kapoor took up more diverse roles in the 1980s; he starred
in Subhash Ghai's reincarnation thriller Karz (1980),
which failed at the box office but went on to become a cult classic, and played
a man forced by customs to marry his widowed sister-in-law in the 1986
drama Ek Chadar Maili Si, adapted from Rajendra Singh Bedi's
novella of the same name.
Kapoor's other film roles, mainly as the romantic lead, between
1973 and 2000, included Raaja (1975), Laila Majnu (1976), Sargam (1979), Prem
Rog (1982), Coolie (1983),Saagar (1985), Chandni (1989), Bol
Radha Bol (1992), Damini (1993), and Karobaar (2000).
Kapoor debuted as director in Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999).
Supporting actor (After 2000)
Kapoor felicitated by Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and General
V. K. Singh at the inauguration of the BRICS Film Festival.
Kapoor successfully transitioned to character acting in the early
2000s, and went on to appear in several successful films in supporting roles,
including as an antagonist in Agneepath (2012), and a gay character in Student
of the Year (2012).He won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for playing
a middle-aged father trying to buy his own car in Do Dooni Chaar (2011); he
also bagged a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his work in Kapoor &
Sons (2016).
His character roles in the 2000s included Hum Tum (2004), Fanaa
(2006), Namastey London (2007), Love Aaj Kal (2009), and Delhi 6 (2009).
He portrayed real-life mobster Dawood Ibrahim in D–Day (2013).
In 2018, he appeared in the Netflix drama Rajma Chawal. He also
starred in 102 Not Out, playing a 76-year-old son of Amitabh Bachchan's
character; the two were reunited onscreen after more than two decades. His work
in Mulk was well-received.
In 2019, his two films were released Jhootha Kahin Ka a
comedy-drama film directed by Smeep Kang and The Body with Emraan Hashmi, a
mystery thriller film written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, which was released
on 13 December 2019. The Body was his last release. Sharmaji Namkeen directed
by Hitesh Bhatia, with Juhi Chawla was under production at the time of his
death.
